About ten years ago, Chinese car manufacturers were boasting about their plans to take over the United States with affordable fresh vehicles. Some consumers spotted examples of these vehicles from companies such as Geely and Chery at auto shows, and the results weren`t awesome. The cars themselves looked unfinished; the awkwardly translated promotional materials demonstrated that these brands didn`t understand the American car-buying public. After reactions ranging from indifference to outright ridicule, the Chinese car companies calmly retreated.
Yet, they didn`t give up. Now, Geely wields Volvo and has embarked building and exporting one of the brand`s sedans from China. Some Detroit-based brands have already begun building American-branded vehicles in China and shipping them back to the U.S. for sale, and others are exploring the idea. This is a drastic switch to all we know about buying American cars.
Right now, Chinese-built cars in America are the exception to the rule. But, just as we got used to buying Chinese-made electronics from familiar brands, the car industry is likely to go after suit. Our appetite for cheap cars keeps growing, and China, already home to the largest auto manufacturing industry in the world, can sate that request.

Buick Envision

Buick Envision
From Buick`s perspective, building the Envision in China makes sense, even as General Motors says they plan to proceed investing in American production and jobs.
Buick vehicles sell very well in China, where the brand is perceived as more luxurious than in its home country. Those strong Chinese sales make it logical to maintain production facilities there. Buick`s reasoning seems to be that, if the Envision wasn`t designed for the U.S. market in the very first place (which they say it wasn`t), it`s not as if the Envision is taking away American jobs. In any case, this is a trend certain to proceed with the General Motors brands.

The Cadillac CT6 is a luxury large sedan that was introduced for the two thousand sixteen model year. There are several variations of the CT6, most of which are built in Michigan. The plug-in hybrid model began shipping from China to the United States this spring.
The CT6 Plug-in Hybrid costs about $21,000 more than a base CT6, but it offers three hundred thirty five horsepower and an electric-only range of thirty one miles on a total charge.

Cadillac CT6 Plug-in Hybrid
Cadillac has said that China was chosen for the car`s production in part because China is receptive to alternative-fuel vehicles, and in part because of proximity to an LG subsidiary in South Korea that supplies the car`s batteries.
If you`re wondering why one of GM`s better-known plug-in hybrid cars, the Chevy Volt, is built in Michigan, while the Cadillac is built in China, you`re very likely not alone. We may see more shifts in production of plug-ins if GM`s strategy proves successful.

The Ford Concentrate is one of the brand`s most affordable models, as long as you can overlook the alluring, high-performance Concentrate RS. When the two thousand Concentrate was launched, air conditioning and power windows were luxuries in an entry-level compact car. Now, infotainment systems are all but compulsory and rearview cameras are mandated beginning with the two thousand eighteen model year. Such switches drive up costs, but customers still want compact cars to come cheap. Ford has saved money in the past by sending Concentrate production to Mexico, but the next generation, due in 2019, will be built in China.

Ford Concentrate
Ford`s announcement came just this June. The company already has a production facility in Hangzhou, which builds Ford vehicles destined for other markets (including China, other countries in Asia, and Europe).
Ford has said they aren`t worried about the quality of the China-built Concentrate , because the assembly lines closely mimic those in Western countries. Chinese factories, tho’, tend to have more automation. Ford`s Hangzhou factory houses six hundred fifty robots that work alongside human workers.
Ford is taking some time off inbetween shuttering production of the current Concentrate and beginning production of the next generation, scheduled for late 2019. If you want an American Ford Concentrate, now is the time to shop.

Volvo S60 Inscription
The S60 Inscription was the very first Chinese-built car from a major manufacturer to be sold to American buyers. Volvo began shipping the Chinese-built S60 Inscription to the United States near the end of 2015, and they plan to budge production of the S90 large sedan to China as well.
Considering Volvo`s latest announcement that, over the next few years, all of its models will become hybrids or EVs, we wouldn`t be astonished if even more Volvo production eventually moves to China, where factories are well-equipped to treat alternative powertrains.
